2008 Sep 30, Virginia Rain

Daniel W.

Another weekend, another big showing by App State! The ACCC's first rainy mountain bike race of the year was hosted by our friends at Virginia Tech this past weekend. The very technical trails at Mountain Lake Resort became even trickier with the rain that rolled into the area Friday.

No wet rocks could stop the App State duo of Alex Hannah and Ryan Fawley however. The two finished first and second respectively in the Mens A race, even after a flat-change by Ryan. In Women's A, the newly upgraded Allison Forkner gritted her way through the two-lap race; one step closer to Nationals qualification.

Cross champ and first time mountain biker Ariel Leath had a hard-(wo)man's intro to the sport. Crashing early and bruising her knee, Ariel fought through to the finish, getting herself one race closer to the all important A upgrade. In Mens C, Wren Bruton got his first race win. He will be looking to have good showings in Mens B races as we close out the season.

2008 Sep 23, N.C. State Recap

Jacob F.

Once again Appalachian State dominated the mountain bike scene traveling to the N.C. State races this past weekend. With a schedule full of endurance events, Kyle Dubois and Wren Bruton each came home with a second place finish in one of two cross country races for the Men's C, while in Women's A Rebecca Tomaszewski once again won everything she entered, sweeping the weekend and even finishing ahead of most of the Men's B field in short track. Allison Forkner brought home a 4th and 3rd place on Saturday in her mountain bike debut. Thatcher Hurt was able to bring home a second place in Men's B XC, and in Men's A Alex Hannah, Michael Koballa, Alex Ryan, Ryan Fawley, and Dan Wendover consistently scored in the top 5 all weekend long.

Currently the Appalachian team is just barely sitting in second place behind West Virginia Wesleyan College, but this will quickly change once we make up our deficit from a missed WVU race weekend.

2008 Sep 8, App State Home MTB Race

Jacob F.

This weekend, Appalachian hosted their home mountain bike race at Dark Mountain in Wilksboro, which also served to kick off the 2008 Mountain season. The courses were great and the riders solid, and as expected Appalachian came out on top.

In XC, Rebecca Tomaszewski easily dominated the Women's A field. In Women's B, Amanda Gilbert took first place with Mae Beeler finishing close behind in second. Similarly, Brendan Murray took the win in the Men's C field, with veteran Martin Wadewitz taking second and Kyle Dubois taking third. In Men's B action, Dan Wendover took a dominate win reminiscent of his first place finish last year, with Jacob Florence coming in second, outsprinting a Virginia Tech rider. In the Men's A race Alex Hannah finished with the win with Alex Ryan taking second and Ryan Fawley taking third. Honorable mention goes to Michael Koballa who flatted on the start line but fought back tooth and nail for eight, having to pass the entire Men's B field.

In the afternoon everyone's attention turned to the first gravity event of the season with Dual Slalom. Rebecca Tomaszewski and Amanda Gilbert won Women's A and B, respectively. Craig Folsom and Will Washam made their debut taking first and third in Men's B, showing up big in their first collegiate race. The big boys came out to play, though, in Men's A. There was no contest between Appalachian State and any other school. Andrew Mueller was just barely edged out and took third for the day, while Mike Thomas was able to come out on top over Steven Trottier, even if just barely.

Sunday morning saw short track where, in Men's C action, Zach Parker took home a big win to counter his mechanical in the prior day's XC race. In Men's B, Noah Niwinski was the big story, winning with little effort. Dan

2008 Jul 2, ASU Cycling Still Rollin'

Daniel W.

Even though school is on a break for the summer and everyone seems to be on vacation for the 4th of July, App State Cycling is still training and racing all over the country.

Recently, four team members represented ASU at the Cowbell Challenge 12-hour mountain bike race in Davidson, NC. Thatcher Hurt, David Forkner, Alex Hannah, and Daniel Wendover all entered the 12 Solo event with the best result coming from Alex Hannah. After suffering his way through the oppressive heat for over 10 hours, Hannah placed 5th, tackling a few pros in an extremely heated field.

For full results check out Active.com. While you're there take a look at Boone local star cyclist Beth Frye's result in Women's Single Speed. Congratulations to her as well.

Photos from Cowbell here, find Alex and Thatcher in Pro Open Male, Dan in 12 Hr Sport Male, and Dave and Beth in Singlespeed.

On the road, senior rider Jacob Florence has been racing all summer. The latest hearsay is that he has almost earned enough points to upgrade to a Cat2. According to his blog, he has taken it easy for the last couple of weeks to get his legs back.
After a full collegiate season and his heavy race schedule for the first half of the summer, most would agree that the break was well deserved.
For more, check out Flo's always entertaining and sometimes family-friendly blog

Finally, resident downhillers Daniel Sapp and Michael Thomas have spent their summer racing big bikes all over the mainland US and Canada. Unfortunately "motomike" Thomas broke his pinky recently and is currently recovering. Good luck to Mike on a quick recoup. He looks to be back in fo

2008 May 5, Cycling Team on App State Main Page

Daniel W.

The cycling team is getting some great recognition on the main page of Appstate.edu this week! Here's a direct link to the article.

The write-up discusses App State Cycling's recent conference championship in road and also the first ever ACCC Triple Crown achievement. It also has our latest team picture available for download.

So as the school year wraps up, we'll see a few changes at App State cycling. Long-time team leader and president David Forkner is graduating and getting married in less than two weeks. We wish he and Bonnie the best of luck in this and all of their future adventures. We also want to thank all other graduating members, including Michael Wilson, Michael Trivette, and Chris Jones.

With these great riders moving on, App State Cycling will work to step up and return next year with one of the strongest squads the ACCC has ever seen. Returning strength includes Alex Hannah, Jacob Florence, Jason Wadell, Robert Jameson, Mike Thomas, and Alex Ryan. These riders will be prepared to take on the conference and the nation in mountain bike season this fall. Watch for App State to hit the summer races in force while finding form and preparing for the upcoming collegiate seasons.

2008 Apr 22, ACCC Road Champions and 2007-08 Triple Crown Title!!!

Daniel W.

The Appalachian State Cycling Team recently wrapped up another successful year with the completion of the road season this past weekend at the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Cycling Conference Championships. The championship races took place in nearby Winston-Salem and were hosted this by Wake Forest. With a large roster of 29 racers, the Mountaineers locked up their 3rd straight ACCC Road Championship in dominant style! With this win the Apps also pulled off the Conference Triple Crown for the first time in school history. The ACCC Triple Crown consists of conference championships in all three disciplines for the 2007-2008 school year; Mountain, Cyclocross, and Road.

Conference Championship Review:
The ACC Championship weekend witnessed an onslaught of domination imposed by the men and women from Boone. The weekend kicked off with the road race in Lewisville, NC where Appalachian racked up top five and top ten finishes. As usual, Chris Jones took home 1st place in Men's D after rocketing to the sprint finish. Jones credited teammate Emerson Howe with the superb leadout to the finish and for protecting him throughout the race. Martin Wadewitz took 7th in Men's C, while Zach Greene claimed his second win on the season with a 1st place finish in Men's B. David Forkner rode a strong race in Men's A after being aggressive early on in the day. It would pay off for the senior from Franklin, NC as Forkner rode to a 2nd place finish. In the Women's B race, Amanda Gilbert brought home a great 4th place finish.

The 40k Team Time Trial put a finish to Saturday's races and Appalachian didn't dissapoint the spectators. The Mountaineers took home several awards from the team time trials including 1st in Men's D, 2nd in Men's B, 3rd in Men's A, and 2nd in Women's A.
