2009 May 8, Road season comes to a close...
Rachel V.
After a banner Fall season, ASU Cycling fought hard this spring to claim second place in the ACCC road season. A hard charging Pfeiffer University team took their first conference title with ASU only 7 points behind in the final conference standings. With a dominant close to the season and many riders ready for upgrades, all can rest assured that the men and women from Boone are fired up for the conference road title next year in 2010!
Attention now turns to next season and early preparations for the sponsorship assault this summer. Team members will be working hard to gather sponsorship dollars in order to fund two west coast trips next year for mountain bike nationals and cyclocross nationals in Truckee, California and Bend, Oregon, respectively. ASU will try to repeat as national champs in both this fall and winter.

Another intense weekend of racing brought out the best from some of ASU's finest riders. Virginia Tech hosted a spectacular weekend and we sent out largest road team to date. Saturday started with a rolling road race course, and Ariel Leath and Ariana DeBussey made their first road appearance of the season, taking 5th and 7th place in Women's C. Travis Goodwin rode in at 7th place in Men's D, while Mike Flanagan rode to an impressive 12th in his first road race with the team. In Women's B, Allison Forkner and Rachel VandenEnde scored valuable points, finishing 6th and 8th. Matt Finn found the perfect wheel in the Men's C race, sprinting for third place, very impressive! Powerhouse Amanda Gilbert muscled in at 6th place in Women's As. The Men's B duo of Nick Inabinet and Mark Woodall suffered up the final climb (added on to the end of the Men's and Women's A and Men's B race) for 2nd and 4th, continuing the winning precedent they have set all season. In a stacked field full of intense racing, Noah Niwinski fought it out against the best climbers in the conference for 9th, despite the five men already up the road at the start of the climb.
Despite all this intense racing so early in the day, ASU managed to field Team Time Trial teams in every category, a feat no other team was able to replicate. Noah Niwinski, Mike Koballa, Nick Inabinet, and Jacob Florence all lined up together in Men's A. While the other squads all had full aerodynamic equipment, Time Trial bikes, and teams stacked with strong A riders, these four executed flawless rotations, working together and sacrificing all for each other. The result was a big win in the first TTT of the season in a race that saw first and last place separated by less than half a minute over the fifteen mile course.

The App State Cycling Team made the long drive to Morgantown, West Virginia for a full and important weekend of racing. The action started Saturday morning with an individual time trial featuring a large climb on an otherwise very fast course. Amanda Gilbert was able to edge out a Pfieffer rider, gaining the team valuable points in the Women's A race. Mark Woodall brought home a solid second place in Men's C, and Nick Inabinet brought home the expected win in Men's B. Likewise, Jacob Florence found form enough to post the fastest time of the day, winning Men's A.
Saturday afternoon featured an on campus crit. Rachel VandenEnde, clearly out for a good result after a certain win in the TT was botched due to terrible course marking, brought home a very impressive third in addition to prime points every time the bell was wrung. Likewise, Mark Woodall had a score to settle, winning the Men's C race as well as every single prime, while Kyle DuBois finished well in the top ten bringing in prime points of their own. Nick Inabinet followed up his earlier win with a solid second in the crit, winning three of the four primes.
Sunday brought the first test of the ACCC's climbing ability, and Mark Woodall answered with a resounding win in Men's C, while Dustin Dew rolled in at a respective eighth. Rachel VandenEnde battled girls fresh from not racing the previous day and came in sixth, and likewise Amanda Gilbert came in fifth. In Men's B Brendan Murray posted his first big result of the season with an impressive fifth, while Martin Wadewitz came in ninth. In Men's A, an early break representing every team but Appalachian, along with a series of mechanicals, seemed to be the end of the day for Jacob Florence and Michael Koballa, but the two worked together for a lap and a

Well, it looks like details on our home race are finalized, so get excited! We'll need as many volunteers as we can get, and ASU students race for free, so try to make it to as much of the weekend as you can. The flyer can be found here.
Saturday will feature a road race and team time trial out in Todd, with the road race containing a significant climb and the TTT being flat and fast. Sunday will wrap up the weekend with the second annual Boone Mall crit. We'll start organizing rides to check out the road race course and now is the time to form your TTT teams and start practicing that pacelining (demonstrations to come at the meeting).

The sponsors page has been down this semester so we wanted to take a minute and thank all of our sponsors here. With our paltry school funding, the ASU Cycling Team truly could not function or compete without the support of our sponsors. Please look through our sponsor list below, visit the websites, and patronize their businesses.

With the Start of Spring break the Mountaineers headed to the coast of Williamsburg. Day 1 started with the an ITT where Rachel led us out with an impressive 7th. Nick in the C field showed up, finished up the competition, then Cat'ed up. Jacob and Mark also showed their true colors (red, white & blue) and unleashed top ten finishes in the A and B field.
Day 2, The Mountaineers showed up with paddles in hand to spank the competition. In the C race Mark Blitzkrieged the field in a come from behind sprint to finish 2nd, with his teammate Dustin close behind in 6th. For the Womens A's our Gillyweed pushed through the pain and was able to hang on for a 7th place finish. As for the B's Nick decided to race like the day before and CRUSH EVERYONE!
Up next on the schedule the Mountaineers will be heading up to West Virginia where we can expect similar terrain to Boone and similar results.
